SIMULATION ANALYSIS OF ORTHOGONAL FREQUENCY DIVISION MULTIPLEXING SYSTEMS WITH DIVERSITY RECEPTION SAI SRAVAN BHARADWAJ KARRI, M.S The University of Texas at Arlington, 2008 Supervising Professor: Vasant K Prabhu With the rapid increase in the utility of voice and data services, there is a demand for higher data rates and reliability in wireless communications. A wireless communication channel is prone to degrading effects such as multi-path fading, inter symbol interference (ISI) etc. Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM), a candidate for the 4 generation wireless systems, mitigates these effects and supports higher data rates. The performance analysis of a complex system like OFDM, is a challenging task where analytical methods become cumbersome to be used. Simulation based approaches provide a fair estimate of the performance in such cases. In this thesis, the performance of an OFDM system on Additive White Gaussian(AWGN), slow-flat, slow, fast-frequency selective fading channels has been analyzed through Monte Carlo(MC) simulations. Some of the analytical techniques previously used to evaluate the performance of diversity combining schemes-Maximal Ratio Combining(MRC), Equal Gain Combining(EGC)on slow flat fading channels have been summarized. The effect of inter-carrier interference(ICI) and ISI on OFDM systems for different channel conditions has been studied and the performance of few techniques to mitigate the degradation due to ISI, ICI such as diversity-reception, equalization, coding

Joint Frequency-Domain STTD and Antenna Diversity Reception Based on MMSE Criterion for OFDM/TDM

In this letter, we introduce frequency-domain spacetime transmit diversity (STTD) encoding/decoding to orthogonal frequency division multiplexing combined with time division multiplexing (OFDM/TDM) on a frame-by-frame basis (i.e., over several concatenated OFDM signals in the frequency-domain) to achieve both spatial and frequency diversity gains and improve the bit error rate (BER) performance...

Characterisation of impulse noise effects on space-time block-coded orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signal reception

This correspondence presents the characterisation of impulse noise effects on the space-time blockcoded orthogonal-frequency-division-multiplexing (STBC-OFDM) symbol reception, in which the conventional OFDM system is combined with the antenna-diversity/spatial-diversity in order to achieve the high data transmission rates. The weak impulse noise may be combated by the longer OFDM symbol durati...

This paper proposes an analytical model for evaluating the performance of dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) for all optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (AO-OFDM) optical wireless channel. The investigated performance for proposed system is evaluated for the parameters  bit error rate (BER) and Q factor .The constellation diagrams, and bit error rate (BER) of the recei...

An Efficient Hierarchical Modulation based Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing Transmission Scheme for Digital Video Broadcasting

Due to the increase of users the efficient usage of spectrum plays an important role in digital terrestrial television networks. In digital video broadcasting, local and global content are transmitted by single frequency network and multifrequency network respectively. Multifrequency network support transmission of global content and it consumes large spectrum. Similarly local content are well ...

BER performance of OFDM-MDPSK system in frequency-selective Rician fading with diversity reception

A closed form formula is derived for the bit error rate (BER) of orthogonal-frequency-division-multiplexing (OFDM) with -ary differential-phase-shift-keying (MDPSK) systems in frequency-selective Rayleigh and Rician fading channels with diversity reception. New BER curves are obtained as a function of the rms delay spread of the diffused component for three different types of delay profiles: 1)...
